Custody & Wallets

Should I use custodial or self-custody for crypto?

Published Updated 8 min read

Is self-custody safer than keeping crypto with an exchange?

Neither model is automatically safer. Custody places key management and account recovery with a provider but adds provider, freeze and insolvency risk. Self-custody removes that dependency but makes you responsible for keys, backups and transactions. Choose only after testing recovery, security and your ability to avoid irreversible mistakes.

Scope: Global educational guidance; legal ownership and insolvency treatment depend on local law and provider terms.

A backup is useful only if it can restore control safely
  1. 1List the provider-failure and personal-error scenarios you need to survive.
  2. 2Read the custodian's legal and recovery terms or the wallet's backup documentation.
  3. 3Practise with a small amount and complete a documented recovery or withdrawal test.
  4. 4Keep exposure within the amount your tested process can protect and recover.

First identify who controls the keys

A wallet does not hold coins like a physical purse; it manages the keys used to authorise transactions on a blockchain. In a custodial account, the provider controls those keys and records your entitlement. In self-custody, your wallet signs with keys you control.

Custody can simplify password recovery, compliance and buying or selling. It also creates dependence on the provider’s security, withdrawals, solvency and legal terms. A registration, reserve snapshot or familiar brand does not guarantee immediate return of assets after failure.

Self-custody swaps institutional risk for operational risk

Self-custody removes the need to ask a provider to release funds, but there may be no help desk capable of reversing a transfer or reconstructing a lost seed phrase. Malware, fake wallet software, unsafe backups and signing a malicious transaction can cause permanent loss.

Hot wallets are convenient because keys are available to an internet-connected system. Cold or hardware wallets can reduce online exposure, but they do not verify every address or contract for you. Device security and recovery backups both matter.

Test the failure path before increasing value

For a custodian, test login recovery and a small withdrawal, and keep independent records of the legal entity and transactions. For self-custody, follow the wallet maker’s official recovery procedure using a small test wallet before relying on it. Never type a real seed phrase into an untrusted site or support chat.

Revisit the choice when the value, purpose or your ability changes. The safer route is the one whose failure modes you understand and have rehearsed—not the one with the strongest slogan.

Questions

Does a hardware wallet make crypto completely safe?

No. It can keep signing keys away from an online computer, but phishing, malicious approvals, supply-chain issues, bad backups, coercion and address mistakes remain possible.

Should I keep everything on one exchange or one wallet?

Concentration increases the impact of one failure, while multiple setups increase complexity and recovery burden. Use only arrangements you can secure, document and test; there is no universally safe split.

Can a custodian recover my crypto if I lose account access?

Some custodians offer identity-based recovery, subject to their checks and availability. That process can help after password loss, but it also creates account-takeover and provider-dependency risks.
