Regulation & Jurisdiction
What does crypto exchange regulation protect?
Does an exchange's registration mean my crypto is protected?
No. A registration identifies an entity and a defined activity; it does not guarantee your assets or returns. Check the US legal entity, the specific service and the applicable regulator. A money-services-business registration is different from securities or derivatives oversight, and crypto assets are not insured bank deposits.

Scope: United States; protections depend on the legal entity and product.
- Entity
- A brand can serve customers through different companies
- Scope
- Check permissions for the exact product and your state
- Protection
- Registration does not guarantee investments or repayment
- 1Copy the exact legal entity named in the venue's terms, not only its brand.
- 2Find that entity directly on the official regulator register.
- 3Match the registered activities, domain and contact details to the product you will use.
- 4Check what compensation, complaints and insolvency protections actually cover.
Ask “who, where and for what?”
“Regulated exchange” is incomplete. A brand can use different legal entities for customers in different countries, and an entity may be registered for one activity while offering other products through an affiliate. Start with the terms shown to your account and copy the exact company name and number.
Open the official regulator’s register yourself. Match the company, website domain and contact details. Then read the scope: money-laundering registration, payment services, securities business and derivatives permission are not interchangeable.
Check the US entity and activity
FinCEN provides an MSB registrant search. Match the company named in your account terms, then examine the other permissions that apply to its actual products. Do not interpret an MSB entry as a securities or derivatives license. State restrictions may also differ.
The SEC warns that crypto asset securities and their platforms can carry significant risks and lack important investor protections. Ask what happens if the custodian fails and distinguish crypto from any separate cash arrangement.
Registration cannot remove core risks
Supervision can improve accountability and create clearer rules, but it cannot prevent market loss, cyberattack, operational failure, fraud or insolvency. Nor does it guarantee that assets labelled “held for customers” will be immediately returned if a provider fails.
Record the legal entity and register page when you open an account. Recheck them before depositing more, because corporate structures and permissions can change. If the venue tells you to use a different domain, agent or bank account from the official record, stop and verify through independently obtained contact details.

Questions
Does registration make crypto risk-free?
No. Market losses, cyberattacks, frozen withdrawals and insolvency remain possible. Check custody and complaints terms separately.
