Fees & Costs
How do crypto exchange fees actually work?
What costs should I compare on a crypto exchange?
Compare the quoted price with a live reference price, the trading fee for your order type and tier, deposit and withdrawal charges, network fees, and any funding or borrowing cost. Use the final order preview for your actual size; a headline maker fee is not the total cost.

Scope: Global mechanics; fee labels, taxes and available products vary by venue and country.
- Maker and taker
- Describe whether an order adds to or immediately removes order-book liquidity
- Spread
- The difference between the available buy and sell prices can matter even when commission is zero
- Fee tier
- Often depends on recent volume, product, region or account status and can change
- Final check
- The venue's live order preview is more useful than a cached comparison
- 1Choose the exact asset pair, order type, payment method and amount you would use.
- 2Record the live quote, spread and trading fee shown in the final preview.
- 3Add deposit, withdrawal, network, conversion, funding and borrowing costs that apply.
- 4Compare the same route and amount on each venue immediately before acting.
Start with the route, not the headline
There is no single “exchange fee”. Buying with a debit card, placing a spot order on an order book, converting one token in a retail interface and withdrawing to a wallet can use different pricing systems on the same venue. Define the full route and amount before comparing anything.
For an order-book trade, a maker order rests and adds liquidity; a taker order matches immediately. A limit order is not automatically a maker order: if it crosses the book and fills at once, the filled part may be charged as taker. Coinbase’s current Exchange documentation, for example, says tiers depend on trailing volume and that partially matched orders can pay both fee types.
Measure the amount that arrives
Compare the venue’s live buy or sell quote with a reliable market reference at the same moment. The gap may include spread, market movement, limited liquidity or a retail mark-up. Then add the displayed trading charge.
If you plan to move the asset, include withdrawal and network charges. If you first deposit or convert fiat currency, include payment and foreign-exchange charges. Margin and derivatives can add borrowing, funding and liquidation fees. Do not transfer merely to “save fees” if the destination or network is unverified.
A fair comparison uses the same assumptions
Use the same pair, size, side, order type, payment rail and withdrawal network on every venue. Record the time because both markets and schedules change. A venue can be cheaper for one route and dearer for another; a single ranked percentage cannot answer every use case.
Never trade extra volume solely to reach a cheaper tier. The additional market risk and trading cost can exceed the fee reduction. The final confirmation screen is the relevant price for your transaction, but still verify the asset, network and destination before approving it.

Questions
Does zero trading commission mean a trade is free?
No. The execution price can include a spread or mark-up, and deposits, withdrawals, conversion or network use may still cost money. Compare the final amount received after the whole route, not one fee label.
Is a limit order always charged a maker fee?
No. A limit order that immediately matches existing liquidity can be a taker order. Some venues offer post-only controls, but rules differ. Check the venue's current order and fee documentation before placing it.
Can I rely on a fee table copied by a comparison site?
Treat it as a lead, not a quote. Fee schedules, tiers and promotions change. Confirm the exact pair, order type, tier and withdrawal route on the venue's live preview.
